Almost all factories that do book and magazine binding have encountered this frustrating problem: the production line is running, and the glue outlet of the glue binding machine suddenly breaks and is intermittent, or directly blocks the glue without dispensing, resulting in the opening, breaking, and uneven thickness of the glue layer on the books.
Once a malfunction occurs, the machine can only be shut down for disassembly, cleaning and debugging, which not only delays the production schedule and reduces production capacity, but also generates a large number of defective products, paper scrap, manual rework, and significant hidden losses.
Many masters’ first reaction is that the machine is broken, but in reality it is not! 80% of the blockages and breaks in the glue assembly machine are not due to equipment failures, but rather problems with the selection of hot melt adhesive, adhesive technology, and daily operation and maintenance.

Today, we will break down the root causes of faults summarized by industry teacher Fu Shicao, and use a practical method of quick investigation and on-site solution to quickly restore the normal operation of the production line without blindly dismantling the machine. At the same time, we will teach you how to avoid problems from the root cause. 01 First distinguish between two types of faults: adhesive blockage vs. adhesive breakage Many people confuse two types of problems and have no idea where to start when troubleshooting. In fact, the symptoms and root causes of the two problems are completely different, and accurate differentiation is necessary to efficiently solve them: 【 Glue blocking 】: The glue outlet does not release glue, the glue outlet is stuck, the glue strip is intermittent, and the glue outlet accumulates carbide hard glue and impurities, completely blocking the glue outlet channel. 【 Glue breakage 】: The glue path is unobstructed, but sudden glue breakage, glue throwing, and glue layer breakage occur during the application process, often during high-speed running, paper thickness switching, and temperature fluctuations. 02 Core Root Cause Disassembly: Why do adhesives get stuck or broken? 1、 Quality issues of hot melt adhesive (core and highest cause) 70% of adhesive failures in glue assembly machines are caused by substandard quality of hot melt adhesive. Many manufacturers choose low-priced and low-quality hot melt adhesive for books and magazines in order to save costs, which may seem to save money, but in reality causes huge losses:
Colloidal impurities are abundant and the purity is low: Poor quality hot melt adhesive contains a large amount of filling powder and impurities, which cannot be completely liquefied after melting, and will slowly accumulate in the filter screen, rubber hose, and glue outlet, gradually blocking the channel.
Poor high temperature resistance and easy carbonization: Non standard hot melt adhesive has poor thermal stability, and long-term constant temperature heating is prone to aging and carbonization, forming black hard adhesive residue that adheres to the inside of the dispensing nozzle, causing poor dispensing and frequent clogging.
Equipment with mismatched fluidity: Poor quality glue with high viscosity, high viscosity and poor fluidity after melting, high-speed equipment cannot keep up with the glue supply, resulting in glue breakage and uneven glue layer directly; If the viscosity is too low, it is easy for the glue to seep, hang and clump.
Mixing glue causes clumping: Hot melt adhesives of different brands and formulas are mixed randomly, and incompatible formulas can produce clumps, hard lumps, and block the glue path and outlet. 2、 Improper debugging of equipment temperature parameters
Low temperature: The temperature of the glue box, hose, and dispensing nozzle cannot reach the melting standard, and the glue does not melt completely, resulting in a semi-solid state with extremely poor fluidity, which directly blocks the dispensing port and causes glue breakage.
Excessive temperature: Heating at high temperatures can accelerate the aging, carbonization, and slagging of hot melt adhesive, which not only clogs the adhesive, but also renders the colloidal properties ineffective. After binding, books are prone to delamination and yellowing. 3、 Equipment maintenance and operational habits
Long term failure to clean the filter screen and rubber nozzle: Residual rubber residue and impurities from daily production accumulate, and the filter screen is not replaced and the rubber outlet is not cleaned regularly. Small impurities accumulate into large blockages.
Failure to properly handle shutdown: Prolonged shutdown without clearing the remaining glue from the glue outlet, resulting in the glue cooling and clumping. When restarted, the nozzle is directly blocked and the glue is broken.
Debris falling into the glue box: Paper debris, dust, and solidified old glue blocks fall into the glue box and enter the glue path with the glue, causing blockage in the passage. 03 Quick troubleshooting+on-site solution steps, even beginners can handle it When encountering glue blockage or breakage faults, there is no need to blindly disassemble the machine. Follow the following sequence of troubleshooting from simple to difficult, and solve the problem in as fast as 5 minutes to restore production: Step 1: Temperature measurement calibration (priority investigation, zero cost solution) Check the temperature of the three sections of the glue box, rubber hose, and dispensing nozzle, and strictly match the parameters of the hot melt adhesive used: conventional EVA hot melt adhesive for books and periodicals, with the temperature of the glue box controlled at 160-170 ℃, the temperature of the rubber hose at 170-180 ℃, and the nozzle temperature at 180-190 ℃. Gradually increase the temperature and maintain a constant temperature for 10 minutes until the colloid is completely melted; Immediately cool down if the temperature is too high to avoid continuous carbonization. Step 2: Visually inspect the glue nozzle and clean the surface blockage After shutting down and cooling down, observe whether there is carbonized black glue, hard blocks, or adhesive accumulation at the adhesive outlet. Use a special copper shovel and copper needle to clean the surface clumps (do not use steel needles to chisel hard to avoid damaging the adhesive nozzle). After cleaning, start the machine and test the adhesive. Most minor blockages can be directly solved. Step 3: Check the filter and rubber path, and identify internal blockages If the adhesive still does not come out or breaks after surface cleaning, it is highly likely that the filter screen is clogged. Remove the filter screen from the rubber box, clean the internal impurities and residue, and replace the filter screen directly if the blockage is severe; At the same time, check whether the rubber hose has hardened rubber blocks and clear the rubber passage. Step 4: Investigate the colloid itself and prevent mixing of colloids Observing the status of the melt adhesive: If the melt adhesive is cloudy, has a large number of particles, and has surface crust and floating slag, it indicates that the quality of the hot melt adhesive is not up to standard or mixed. Immediately empty the inferior glue in the glue box, thoroughly clean the residual impurities in the glue box, replace with high-quality specialized hot melt adhesive for books and periodicals, and prohibit the mixing of different brands of glue at will. 04 Eliminating faults from the root: Choosing the right adhesive is more important than frequent machine repairs Frequent blockage and breakage of adhesive, repeated disassembly, cleaning, and shutdown for debugging may seem like equipment problems, but in reality, it is due to incorrect selection of auxiliary materials. The material costs saved by inferior hot melt adhesive are far from enough to offset the costs of downtime, product scrapping, and labor losses. The most worry free way to completely avoid such problems is to use national standard hot melt adhesive for books and magazines that has high purity, stable fluidity, high temperature resistance, is not easy to carbonize, and is compatible with high-speed glue loading machines. Guangzhou Sunlife hot melt adhesive, which specializes in printing and binding materials, solves the problems of blockage, breakage, and carbonization in the industry, perfectly adapts to various fully automatic and semi-automatic book and magazine binding machines, and reduces the probability of equipment failure from the source. ✅ High purity and low impurities, eliminating the root cause of glue blockage Guangzhou Sunlife’s hot melt adhesive formula for books and magazines is pure, without excess filling impurities. After melting, the colloid is transparent and delicate, without particle residue, and will not accumulate and block the filter screen, rubber hose, and glue outlet. It greatly reduces the frequency of cleaning and dismantling, ensuring the continuous and stable operation of the production line. ✅ Strong thermal stability, high temperature resistance without carbonization After optimizing and upgrading the national standard process, the adhesive has excellent high temperature resistance. The long-term constant temperature melt adhesive is not easy to age, crust, or carbonize, eliminating the production of black glue residue and fundamentally solving the problems of intermittent and blocked glue after long-term operation. ✅ Accurate adaptation of liquidity to mass production equipment The viscosity and melting point parameters are specially tuned for the book and magazine binding machine, with uniform and stable melt flow. When running at high speed, the glue supply is smooth and the glue output is uniform, without insufficient glue supply, glue layer breakage, or glue throwing breakage. It perfectly adapts to the binding needs of thick and thin books, various paper materials. ✅ National standard environmental compliance, balancing quality and efficiency The entire line has passed the HJ 2541-2016 national standard testing, with low VOC, no odor, and no harmful substances. It not only does not block the machine or glue, but also meets the environmental requirements of textbooks, children’s books, and government and enterprise procurement, balancing production efficiency and product compliance. 05 Daily maintenance tips, long-term reduction of equipment failures 1. Regularly clean the glue and replace the mesh: clean the glue nozzle hanging glue and the floating debris in the glue box once a week, replace the mesh every month to avoid the accumulation of impurities; 2. It is strictly prohibited to mix glue, mix old and new glue at will, and thoroughly empty the glue box before replacing the glue; 3. Standardized shutdown operation: Before prolonged shutdown, turn off the glue supply, empty the remaining glue from the glue outlet, and seal the equipment after cooling; 4. Constant temperature and stable operation, avoid frequent and large temperature adjustments, and prevent glue from freezing and heating suddenly, causing clumping and failure.
Blockage and breakage of glue in glue assembly machines are never common equipment problems without solutions, but the inevitable result of incorrect selection of auxiliary materials and inadequate maintenance. Frequent machine repairs are not as good as selecting the right adhesive at once. Stable and high-quality national standard hot melt adhesive can reduce 80% of equipment failures, lower the rate of defective products, improve production capacity, and effectively reduce costs and increase efficiency for factories.
