The occurrence of wire drawing, back cracking, page dropping, or edge glue overflow in book and magazine binding lines may not necessarily be due to “insufficient glue”. The paper coating, glue temperature, glue amount, milling back quality, and finished product cooling time will all jointly affect the results. This article provides a feasible troubleshooting sequence for the post press workshop and explains how to prepare sample conditions when purchasing and binding hot melt adhesive.

Loose binding usually results in three points of exposure: cracking upon detachment, often occurring during wetting, penetration, or adhesive application; After placement, if the page falls off, it is often necessary to check the surface of the paper, the milling back, and the cohesion of the adhesive layer; If it cracks after transportation or low temperature, it should be checked whether the adhesive used matches the actual usage environment of the finished product. Recording the time of the fault occurrence first is more valuable than directly increasing the glue temperature.
When the temperature is low, the flow of the melt adhesive is insufficient, making it difficult to enter the fiber grooves formed by milling back; If the temperature is too high or the gel stays in the melting tank for too long, the color, odor, or viscosity of the gel may change, which can actually cause unstable gluing. The workshop should start from the process window provided by the supplier and gradually check the actual temperature of the melting tank, rubber hose, rubber roller or nozzle, rather than just looking at the set values on the equipment panel.
Copperplate paper, laminated paper, and inner pages with a large ink coverage area have a different surface state from ordinary laminated paper. After changing the paper batch, ink system, or laminating process, a small batch binding test should be conducted again. Insufficient milling back will cause the adhesive layer to lack fibers that can be grasped and attached; Milling too deep may also damage the structure of the book. It is recommended to include the paper name, weight, spine thickness, milling back blade condition, glue amount, and cooling time in the trial machine record for easy reproduction of qualified processes.
The opening time of the glue must match the book speed and pressing position in the graphic and text fast printing scenarios of short orders, urgent items, and multi specification switching. The opening time is too short, and the adhesive surface has lost effective wetting before pressing; If it is too long, it may cause dragging, drawing or limited rhythm. When purchasing, it is not advisable to only ask about the unit price. The equipment type, speed range, book size, paper structure, and expected turnover time should be clearly defined.
