A printing factory in Dongguan that produces corporate brochures received an order for 5000 hardcover books. The book core is made of 128g copperplate paper, and the spine is sealed with the original universal EVA adhesive. It can be stored at room temperature without any problems, but customers have reported that when some books are flipped to the middle, the adhesive layer on the spine side can be seen to be white and slightly cracked, and a few pages can be easily torn off. It took almost a week to rework and redo, and I also paid for the expedited shipping fee.

The first reaction of the factory director was to replace the adhesive with a higher “stickiness”, but the problem did not disappear after the replacement. On the contrary, the overflow of adhesive on the back of the book and the accumulation of adhesive at the milling back were even more unsightly. Later, when technicians came to the door, they realized that the hardcover book core was thick and the paper was stiff. The spine of the book rebounded greatly after being compressed. The EVA of ordinary books and periodicals had a short opening time and insufficient toughness. After cooling, internal stress pulled out micro cracks in the adhesive layer – this is not adhesive or non adhesive, but a mismatch between the toughness and opening time of the adhesive.
Another 3000 copies of the same paper type were printed for tracking: the rework rate for white spine and missing pages decreased from about 8% to just over 2%, and the customer’s batch of restocking was approved in one go. The factory director said that the biggest gain was not “switching to expensive glue”, but understanding that the requirements for glue are different between high-end and general decoration, and that one universal glue cannot dominate the world.
Q: Can PUR hot melt adhesive be used for hardcover books?
Answer: Yes, PUR has better toughness and temperature resistance, making it suitable for high-end picture books. However, the equipment investment and curing waiting time are higher, and it is only cost-effective if the quantity is large and the requirements are high.
Question: How to determine whether it is a problem with the glue or the equipment?
Answer: First, check if the page is “paper fiber breakage” or “adhesive layer detachment”; The former is a paper/pressure issue, while the latter is adhesive. Check again if the glue temperature and amount applied are sufficient.
Q: Are there any ready-made high-end models available for trial?
Answer: Guangzhou Sunlife TradingSunlife Hot Melt AdhesiveThere are EVA special models for hardcover spine and thick book core, which support sending samples and providing parameter suggestions first, with low risk for small-scale trial production.
Summary: The opening of hardcover spine glue is often due to a mismatch between the toughness/opening time of the glue rather than insufficient stickiness. By selecting specialized glue particles and adjusting the process accordingly, the rework rate can be significantly reduced.

The force, material combination, and equipment rhythm borne by the lifting rope, side edges, and bottom adhesive of paper tote bags are not completely the same. When choosing hot melt adhesive for hand-held bags, the spraying method, pressing cycle, paper material, and usage environment should be clearly explained first, and then the matching degree between […]
