Binding is the process of connecting the various pages of a book into a volume. The history of binding began in the first century AD, when religious codes were printed and bound on kraft paper. This technique marked the beginning of binding and the same concept is still used today.
How has the binding process evolved?
Before the invention of the printing press in Gutenberg, the art of binding was mainly practiced by monks who copied and re-copied entire libraries. However, in 1447, with Gutenberg’s invention, it enhanced the ability to replicate and eventually brought books to the streets, but all binding was still done by hand. In the 19th century, people developed the technology of making paper from wood pulp, which greatly reduced the cost of paper. The greatest breakthrough in binding progress occurred in the late 19th century and the early 20th century. In 1868, David McConnell Smyth applied for a patent for the first sewing machine designed specifically for binding. Over the next three decades, Smyth continued to develop machines for gluing, trimming, shell-making and shell-filling. Many of his machines are still in use today.
Perfect binding was invented in 1895, but it was not widely used until 1931 when Albatross Books first introduced paperback books. Soon, Penguin Books produced paperback editions of its classic books in 1935. In 1939, Pocket Books began to produce its popular paperbacks, which soon became popular and soon everyone was reading paperbacks. However, the early perfect binding was done with cold glue, which would become brittle over time. However, in the 1940s, DuPont developed a hot-melt adhesive for binding processes, making books more durable.
Fast forward to today, technology and techniques have changed, but binding is still used to compile information today. The development of hot melt adhesives for binding has significantly reduced the cost of producing books and made our world filled with books.
Adhesive binding: Adhesive binding is a fast and inexpensive binding method, mainly used for binding paperback books. The edges of the text blocks on the page are roughened. Then apply the quick-drying adhesive to the rough pages and connect the casing or cover without sewing.
PUR: Derived from perfect bonding, this hot melt adhesive is similar to EVA hot melt adhesive due to the use of PUR, except that it is made of polyurethane reactive materials. As the adhesive dries, a natural chemical reaction occurs when exposed to moisture in the air. This chemical reaction increases the tensile and bending strength of the book. When PUR is used for binding, it can make books more durable, reduce creases on the spine, and give them excellent lying quality. The disadvantage of using PUR is that it is slightly more expensive, but less adhesive is used each time and the curing time is longer. PUR adhesive is also approved for Otabind-style binding.
