Implementing safety protocols and following best practices for workplace safety is crucial for the success of businesses, the safety of workers, and continuing to promote safer working conditions in order to prevent workplace injuries. Hot melt adhesive also poses other hazards to the workplace and requires special care to handle safely.

The Development of Safety and Sustainability of Hot Melt Adhesive
The chemical composition of hot melt adhesive includes polymers, plasticizers, tackifiers, and antioxidants, each of which can adjust the characteristics of the product to ensure high adhesive strength under different temperature and operating conditions.
Polymers are the core components that serve as the adhesive framework. Plasticizers affect viscosity. Adhesives increase the strength of adhesives through their performance properties. Antioxidants can affect the ability of hot melt adhesives to withstand high temperatures for extended periods of time without compromising the integrity of their chemical composition.
With the new development of hot melt adhesive, these products should improve manufacturing efficiency and the value of products created using hot melt adhesive. This opens the door for these products to meet new regulations on security and sustainability for these applications.
The advancement of chemical composition enables hot-melt products to resist adhesive failure within a certain temperature range, be compatible with various substrates, reduce waste, minimize downtime in production, and gain more mileage from the number of products used. The increasing attention to sustainability has also improved the environmental friendliness of hot melt adhesive products themselves and the processes required for their effective and safe use.
Hot melt adhesive in use
Hot melt adhesive is most commonly used for packaging, sealing, and binding, requiring special care to avoid severe burns, which can result in slow production lines and worker injuries during downtime.
Although hot melt adhesive is harmless as an unheated thermoplastic raw material, it must add a large amount of heat to transform the material into a molten form in order to function, typically applied at 160 ° C. Therefore, workers need to be extra careful and follow strict guidelines to safely handle hot melt products. To ensure the safety of operators, it is necessary to fully commit to hot melt adhesive safety practices and risk management.
Take preventive measures
Personal protective equipment (PPE) should include at least goggles with side shields and high-temperature resistant gloves. To add to PPE, the safety data sheet (applicable to all hot melt products) expands the necessary safety equipment to assist workers in taking the best precautions in the workspace.
A big step towards promoting ideal safety conditions for hot melt adhesive is to regularly maintain the equipment used by workers for applying hot melt products. From maintenance of hoses and conveying systems to optimal temperature consistency, equipment monitoring and maintenance should be carried out regularly.
The hot melt material tank should be filled to three-quarters of its capacity to ensure optimal performance of the hot melt machine and reach the appropriate application temperature. To fill the water tank with minimal risk, a spoon should be used to avoid contamination, reduce splashing, and prevent overflow. Any particles or hot melt materials spilled on the ground should be immediately cleaned and discarded to prevent workers from slipping on the product and avoid contamination. The automatic filling system is a great method to prevent overflow, keep dirt and debris out, while maintaining adhesive levels, thus freeing up time for operators to complete other tasks on the production line. The hoses on the hot melt equipment should not touch the floor to prevent the radiator and extend the service life of the hoses.
Maintenance, performance, and security
Charcoal is an avoidable hazard that reduces the efficiency of equipment performance, wastes products, and lowers productivity due to its suboptimal conditions. The burnt organic material (charcoal) begins to gel and adhere to the walls of the water tank and hoses, causing the system to degrade over time. Charcoal can also alter the viscosity distribution of hot melt materials, thereby affecting their consistency.
The charcoal cleaning equipment greatly improves the efficiency of hot melt adhesive passing through the application equipment. It is best to remove the coke on the hot melt equipment during shutdown, while cooling the adhesive to avoid production time loss and eliminate interruptions during normal machine use. All maintenance is aimed at limiting workplace hazards caused by equipment failures and improving the performance of hot melt adhesive when used safely by workers.
What to do in an emergency situation
The consistency of application processes and maintenance is of great help in ensuring the optimal functionality of hot melt adhesives and equipment, as well as ensuring the safety of workers. However, if a safety accident does occur, some basic preventive measures will be helpful.
Any molten hot melt adhesive that comes into contact with the skin surface should be processed quickly. Do not attempt to wipe off the hot melt adhesive in the affected area. Instead, rinse the exposed surface of the skin with cold water, then wrap it with a cool bandage, and seek medical attention immediately. Before use, the safety data sheet should be consulted to view all necessary personal protective equipment and preventive measures required to prevent injury.
In order to improve safety and productivity, appropriate warning and protective measures, as well as backup measures for hot melt equipment, are in place during production on the production line, which can reduce the potential risk of burns to workers and lower the risk of carbonization and equipment failure. By taking the correct measures, the temperature of hot melt adhesive can be quickly adjusted, enabling workers to handle emergency situations in a timely manner and ensuring optimized production line operation time.
