Safety and preventive measures for hot melt adhesives

2022-07-17    Views: 2

To prevent workplace injuries, implementing safety protocols and adhering to best practices in workplace safety are crucial for the success of enterprises, the safety of workers, and the continuous promotion of safer working conditions. Other hazards of hot melt adhesive to the workplace are no exception and require special care to handle safely.

The development of safety and sustainability of hot melt adhesives

The chemical composition of hot melt adhesives includes polymers, plasticizers, tackifiers and antioxidants, each of which can adjust the product’s properties to ensure high bonding strength under different temperatures and operating conditions.

Polymers are the core components that serve as the adhesive framework. Plasticizers affect viscosity. Tackifiers enhance the strength of adhesives through performance attributes. Antioxidants can affect the ability of hot melt adhesives to withstand high temperatures for a long time without compromising the integrity of their chemical composition.

With the new development of hot melt adhesives, these products should enhance manufacturing efficiency and the value of products created using hot melt adhesives. This opens the door for these products to meet the new regulations on safety and sustainability for these applications.

Advancements in chemical composition have enabled hot-melt products to resist adhesive failure within a certain temperature range, be compatible with various substrates, reduce waste, minimize downtime in production, and gain more mileage from the quantity of products used. The growing concern for sustainability has also enhanced the environmental friendliness of hot melt adhesive products themselves and the processes required for their effective and safe use.

Hot melt adhesive in use

Hot melt adhesive is most commonly used in packing seal < / a > and < a href="https://www.hbfuller.in/en/eimea/products-and-technologies/markets-and-applications/paper-converting/graphic-arts- "And-bookbinding "> binding requires special care to avoid severe burns, which could lead to production line slowdowns and worker injuries during downtime.

Although hot melt adhesive is harmless as an unheated thermoplastic raw material, a large amount of heat must be added to convert the material into a molten form for it to function, and it is usually applied at 160°C. Therefore, workers need to be extra cautious and follow strict guidelines to handle hot-melt products safely. To ensure the safety of operators, the entire line needs to be committed to the safety practice and risk management of hot melt adhesives.

Take preventive measures

Personal protective equipment (PPE) should at least include goggles with side guards and heat-resistant gloves. To be added to PPE, the safety data sheet (applicable to all hot melt products) expands the necessary safety equipment to help workers take the best preventive measures in the workspace.

A major step towards promoting ideal safety conditions for hot melt adhesives is the regular maintenance of the equipment that workers use to apply hot melt products. From the maintenance of hoses and conveying systems to the optimal consistency of temperature, the monitoring and maintenance of equipment should be carried out regularly.

The hot melt material tank should be filled to three quarters of its capacity to ensure the optimal performance of the hot melt machine and to reach the appropriate application temperature. To fill the water tank with the least risk, a spoon should be used to avoid contamination, reduce splashing and prevent overflow. Any particles or hot-melt raw materials spilled on the ground should be immediately cleaned up and discarded to prevent workers from slipping on the products and to avoid contamination. An automatic filling system is an excellent method to prevent overflow, keep dirt and debris out, and maintain the adhesive level at the same time, thus freeing up time for operators to complete other tasks on the production line. The hoses on the hot melt equipment must not touch the floor either to prevent radiators and extend the service life of the hoses.

Maintenance, Performance and Security

Carbon is an avoidable hazard. It can reduce the efficiency of equipment performance, waste products and lower productivity due to suboptimal conditions that lead to it. The charred organic material (carbon) begins to gel and adhere to the walls of the water tank and hoses, causing the system to deteriorate over time. Carbon can also alter the viscosity distribution of hot-melt materials, thereby affecting their consistency.

The carbon cleaning equipment has greatly enhanced the efficiency of hot melt adhesive passing through the application equipment. It is best to remove the coke from the hot melt equipment during the downtime, while the adhesive cools down to avoid production time loss and eliminate interruptions during the normal operation of the machine. All maintenance is aimed at limiting the workplace hazards caused by equipment failures and enhancing the performance of hot melt adhesives when workers use them safely.

What should be done in an emergency?

Consistency in application processes and maintenance is of great help in ensuring the optimal functionality of hot melt adhesives and equipment as well as guaranteeing the safety of workers. However, if a safety accident does occur, some basic preventive measures will be helpful.

Any molten hot melt adhesive that comes into contact with the skin surface should be dealt with promptly. Do not try to wipe off the hot melt adhesive in the affected area. Instead, rinse the exposed skin surface with cold water, then bandage it with a cold bandage, and seek medical attention immediately. Before use, you should consult the safety data sheet to check all necessary personal protective equipment and preventive measures required to prevent injury.

To enhance safety and productivity, during the production period on the production line, appropriate warning and protective measures as well as backup measures for hot melt equipment in place can reduce the potential risk of workers getting burned and lower the risks of carbonization and equipment failure. By taking the right measures, the temperature of the hot melt adhesive can be quickly adjusted, enabling workers to handle emergencies in a timely manner and ensuring the optimization of the normal operation time of the production line.
