Will hot melt adhesive catch fire? Reasons and safety operation points for overheating and fire of glue pot

2026-10-14    Views: 6    Chinese

If the glue pot in the workshop is left on for a long time, some people may worry: will the glue burn? The conclusion is——At normal operating temperatures (160-180 ℃), EVA hot melt adhesive itself is not flammableThe real risk comes from the long-term overheating, dry burning, and carbonization accumulation of the glue pot, which pushes the local temperature beyond the critical point. This belongs toPreventable safety precautionsBelow, explain the principles, reasons, and prevention clearly.

1、 First answer directly: Will it catch fire

The flash point/ignition point of EVA hot melt adhesive is usuallyfar aboveNormal working range (160-180 ℃), there is still a considerable distance from the ignition point when operating normally, so there is no need to talk about discoloration. But the glue pot is a “continuously heated” device: once the temperature gets out of control and rises, or the glue material at the bottom of the pot burns dry, the risk will quickly accumulate. So the problem is not whether the glue can burn, but whether the equipment is properly managed.

2、 Why do glue pots catch fire: 4 main reasons

1. Overheating and dry burning

If the temperature control fails or the temperature is artificially raised, the glue liquid may exceed the upper limit for a long time, gradually decompose, produce gas, and carbonize. If the local temperature exceeds the critical point, it may ignite. In Sunlife training, ‘90% of after-sales service is caused by equipment temperature control failure’ – the actual deviation at 160 ℃ is large, and the risk of fire is an extreme manifestation of this type of loss of control.

2. Carbonization accumulation (lower ignition point of coking materials)

If the glue pot is not cleaned for a long time, the coking material at the bottom will accumulate and become thicker. These carbides have a lower ignition point than new adhesives and are potential “sparks”. The instructions for using pearl cotton thread specifically state that “the glue groove should be cleaned about once every two weeks (to prevent carbonization and fire)”, which is aimed at this item.

3. There are open flames or flammable materials around

Smoking, welding sparks, and flammable materials such as cardboard boxes/packaging films stacked too close to the glue pot can amplify small hidden dangers that could have been controlled.

4. Poor ventilation and VOC accumulation

The melting process releases a small amount of volatile components, which accumulate locally in poor ventilation and are more prone to accidents when encountering high-temperature surfaces or sparks.

3、 Prevention points (6 workshop guidelines)

  1. Set temperature upper limit+over temperature alarmThe glue pot is set to not exceed the upper limit of the process card, equipped with an over temperature power-off/alarm device, and inspected by a dedicated person.
  2. Prohibition of dry burningThe glue pot cannot be burned empty; Temporarily stop the machine and confirm the amount of glue, cooling or insulation first.
  3. Periodic cleaningClean the bottom coking material in about two weeks (based on the actual amount of glue used), and do not wait for it to accumulate.
  4. Temperature control calibrationCheck the “displayed temperature vs actual temperature” with a thermometer to prevent the display from being normal but actually out of control.
  5. Clean up the surroundingsDo not place cardboard boxes, film materials, or solvents around the glue pot; Strictly prohibit fire and welding.
  6. Keep ventilatedThe ventilation in the workshop is normal to avoid the accumulation of volatile components in different parts.

4、 What if there is a fire (initial disposal)

  • Power off first, then extinguish the fireCut off the power/heating of the glue pot as soon as possible to prevent continuous heating.
  • Use the right fire extinguisherEquipped with carbon dioxide (CO ₂) or dry powder fire extinguishers;Do not directly pour high-temperature melted glue with water——High temperature glue will splash and burn the surface when it comes into contact with water.
  • Small fire cover/sandSmall areas can be covered with fire blankets and dry sand to isolate the air.
  • If you can’t control it, evacuate and call the policeExceeding the initial disposal capacity, evacuate immediately and call the fire department to prioritize personal safety.

5、 Relationship with Sunlife’s real business

Sunlife repeatedly emphasizes two points in the hot melt adhesive training and “Instructions for Use”: firstlyDevice temperature control is the first step to turn off(90% of after-sales problems are caused by temperature control failure), the second isThe adhesive groove should be regularly cleaned to prevent carbonization and fireThese two points are both quality and safety concerns. When users receive Sunlife hot melt adhesive, the accompanying process card will provide recommended operating temperature and cleaning cycle, which can be followed to minimize the risk of overheating and fire.

Explanation: The temperature and cleaning cycle described in this article are general safety points, and the specific machine parameters are subject to Sunlife’s accompanying “Instructions/Process Card”; The upper limit varies for different models, please refer to the actual model technical data for accuracy. The safety regulations are subject to local fire safety requirements and enterprise regulations.
