Hot melt adhesive is a type of thermoplastic that melts into a solid state by heating and applying temperature. When the adhesive begins to solidify (heat loss) before the material is bonded, cold bonding occurs, which can lead to bonding failure. Usually, it appears to be firmly adhered after bonding, but the bonding strength may not be sufficient. Always heat the glue, quickly bond the substrate to be bonded together and apply pressure.
After bonding, low temperature can also cause “cold cracking”. This situation occurs when the adhesive is exposed to excessively cold temperatures, which may be caused by transportation or storage conditions leading to its failure. When observing the bonding line, the hot melt adhesive may appear to have “broken”. Exposure to extremely cold environments should be minimized as much as possible, or better cold resistant adhesives should be used instead.
