Book Adhesive Series – Correct Use of Book Binding Adhesive

Based on past experience and various reference materials, Sunlife will list common usage details as follows:

1、 The influence of temperature and humidity in production plants

EVA book binding adhesive is a thermoplastic adhesive, and its opening time after application is affected by indoor environmental temperature and humidity. Generally, the indoor temperature (i.e. production workshop) should be maintained at a constant temperature, preferably between 15-26 ℃, and the humidity should be kept at around 50%. However, it is understood that among the book binding enterprises in the country, it is very rare to meet our standard requirements. Therefore, in many different regions, when using hot melt adhesive, there may occasionally be too many bubbles generated during the summer, making it difficult to cure and cool. In winter, there are problems such as adhesive curing, shortened cooling system time, weak or unattainable adhesion, and book breakage after adhesion. Some companies in certain regions are unable to cut their books perfectly in a timely manner due to the high humidity in the environment, resulting in irregular book shapes after packaging. These phenomena are directly related to the temperature and humidity of the workshop. So, in reasonable circumstances, try to achieve:

2、 Regular maintenance of adhesive equipment

Regularly clean the glue pot and glue box, keep the inside of the glue pot clean, and prevent impurities from settling and accumulating in the glue solution, which may affect the accuracy of temperature control and even cause the thermostat to malfunction and cause glue combustion! Generally, the preheated glue pot should be cleaned every 3 months; The work glue box (for glue application) should be cleaned every two weeks. A system must be established and enforced for cleaning the glue pot to ensure accurate production.

In addition, during long-term repairs and wireless adhesive binding equipment, the glue box and glue pot should be closed to prevent the aging of the glue.

3、 Understand the characteristics of hot melt adhesive models

According to the reference manual of Sunlife hot melt adhesive, understand and master the technical performance (including technical parameters) of various EVA hot melt adhesives. The opening and development time, as well as the curing reaction time, of different hot melt adhesives vary depending on the model. It is particularly important to distinguish between summer and winter adhesives based on strict requirements. The opening and curing working time may also change when the temperature is different.

EVA book binding adhesive is different from general cold glue. According to its characteristics, it must be mastered and paid attention to in use through the following points:

During the open development time of hot melt adhesive, in order to complete the entire binding process, if there is a malfunction or shutdown, it is necessary to promptly remove the books from the book folder, especially paying attention to the book core above the glue wheel not staying.

When using EVA hot melt adhesive, it is important to avoid direct heating with an open flame. It is necessary to use a spacer oil solution for heating (the boiling point of water should be up to 100 ℃), or use a sealed electric heating plate for heating.

The amount of glue in the preheated glue pot should be controlled appropriately. If the amount is too much, the glue will melt in turns, causing it to deteriorate and age, reduce viscosity, and affect adhesion. The temperature of the molten colloid must be strictly controlled within the range of the enterprise’s usage time. Before using solid EVA hot melt adhesive, a preheating treatment device should be used to preheat the system before releasing it into the working adhesive box for use. The preheating time is generally around 2 hours. When using glue, it is not allowed to directly mix solid glue blocks (i.e. glue that has not been preheated) into the glue box of the glue application system to prevent poor management of the fluidity of the glue or to apply glue that cannot completely melt on the back of the book, resulting in uneven glue application and affecting the appearance of the book.
