Paper map folding brochure adhesive problem: a practical case of changing adhesive in a printing company

2026-08-01    Views: 99    Chinese

First of all, let’s talk about the results: a tourism printing factory in East China produces foldable map brochures, with 55 gram ultra-thin floor drawings on the inner pages. Originally, using ordinary rubber particles often resulted in glue penetration and cracking at the folds. After switching to Sunlife hot melt adhesive thin paper special low-temperature adhesive granules and adjusting the process, there were zero complaints about transparent printing, and the folds were repeatedly opened without glue, doubling the order volume.

Product difficulties

  • Map paper has low weight and loose fibers, and ordinary high-temperature adhesive particles penetrate to the front as soon as they are applied, resulting in oil stains and transparent printing;
  • Folding picture books should withstand repeated unfolding and folding, and the book back and folds require high toughness of the adhesive layer;
  • Thin paper is afraid of high temperatures, and a normal construction temperature of 180 ℃ can easily cause the paper to wrinkle and become brittle.

Resolution process

The factory will send the paper samples and finished products to Guangzhou Sunlife Trading for adhesive testing. The technical judgment problem lies in high temperature, too thin adhesive solution, and excessive penetration. The solution is a three pronged approach: using low-temperature thin paper special adhesive particles and lowering the melt glue pot to 135 ℃; Reduce the amount of glue applied and control the glue layer at 0.5 millimeters; Reduce the depth of milling back to avoid milling through thin paper. The first batch of 100 trial units will undergo repeated folding tests, and after all pass, they will be tested again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why can’t we use ordinary sealing rubber particles for thin paper picture books?
The sealing rubber particles have strong penetration and high construction temperature. When used on thin paper, they will inevitably have through printing and wrinkling. Thin paper should use a special formula with low temperature, low permeability, and high toughness.

Q: Will changing the low-temperature adhesive particles affect the durability of the finished product?
can’t. In the context of thin paper, the folding toughness of low-temperature specialized particles is actually better. The key is to choose the right formula and adjust the temperature, glue amount, and milling back together.

This case illustrates that the adhesive problem of thin paper products is often not due to the inability to use adhesive, but rather a mismatch between the selection of adhesive particles and the material used in the manufacturing process.
