Reasons and solutions for carbonization of EVA hot melt adhesive

2022-08-04    Views: 1

When manufacturers have to deal with coke, valuable production time is wasted. Therefore, it is important to understand the reasons for the carbonization of EVA hot melt adhesive and how to prevent it as much as possible.

Hot melt adhesive carbonizes in the sink

Charcoal is composed of combustion particles produced by the thermal degradation of organic matter. This can include:

Some adhesives
Paper materials
Plastic
Polymer
Other pollutants

How does hot melt adhesive cause carbonization

Carbonization may be a common issue with hot melt adhesives used in packaging applications. These applications typically require placing the adhesive in a large melt tank. This means that the adhesive stagnates in the can and ‘cooks’. Over time, the carbonization rate of some EVA hot melt adhesives may be slower than others, but over time, all types of hot melt adhesives may be susceptible to this issue.

How can preheating tanks cause carbonization

If not maintained properly, the storage tank may cause carbonization and damage to the entire equipment. If the melt tank lid is opened for too long and pollutants fall into it, this situation will occur.

In addition, for a given application and production line throughput, the size of the reservoir may not be appropriate. This will affect the amount of adhesive used and the remaining amount of adhesive in the can. In addition, if the temperature of the storage tank is too high, it will increase the possibility of the adhesive cooking faster and causing carbonization.

Solution to reduce carbonization of hot melt adhesive

The EVA hot melt adhesive used is suitable for your application. In some cases, adhesives or metallocenes with low application temperatures can accomplish this task and are less prone to carbonization. However, some adhesives are more prone to carbonization than others, but still suitable for specific applications. Plates or processes may require adhesives that are easier to carbonize in order to achieve the desired performance.

Tips for proper maintenance of preheating tanks include:

1. Always keep the adhesive level in the container at the container capacity; 70%  Or more. If the adhesive level is too low and cold adhesive is added to fill the can, the overall temperature of the adhesive will decrease, which may lead to higher viscosity and wire drawing. Another reason for keeping the preheating tank full is the formation of charcoal in the presence of high temperature and oxygen. If the adhesive level in the can is allowed to decrease, the residual adhesive adhering to the side of the glue can will be exposed to the air and heated on the side of the glue machine. These are the perfect conditions for the formation of charcoal. 4. Ensure that the size of the preheating tank is suitable for the amount of glue applied on the production line. The goal is to flip the adhesive at least once a day for regular addition of fresh materials. In most applications, a smaller melt tank is considered better as it reduces the time the adhesive stays in it. 5. Keep everything around the hot melt adhesive can clean and properly maintain the lid.
