Direct answer: Commonly used for adhesive bound bookshot melt adhesiveThere are roughly five types – EVA hot melt adhesive, APAO hot melt adhesive, PUR reactive hot melt adhesive, POE hot melt adhesive, and animal glue (bone glue) that is still being used in small quantities. EVA covers over 80% of ordinary adhesive bound books in China, PUR is used for high-end hardcover and books with high folding requirements, and the other three categories each have specific scenarios.

Many graphic and text fast printing shops and small printing factories only recognize the three words “glue” when purchasing, and use whatever the supplier provides. Until there are page drops, spine cracks, and non stick laminated paper, I realize that I don’t even know which type of glue I’m using, so I have no way to make any changes. Clarify the categories first, then there is direction for selection.
| Category | Typical softening point | Advantage | shortcoming | Applicable book type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EVA hot melt adhesive | 80~95℃ | Low cost, stable operation, and strong universality | Narrow range of heat and cold resistance | Teaching aids, brochures, regular paperback books |
| APAO hot melt adhesive | 85~105℃ | Good flexibility and low temperature resistance | Slow initial adhesion and high price | Recipes, sheet music, frequently flipped manuals |
| PUR reactive type | moisture curing | Highest strength, long folding life, wide temperature resistance | Special equipment is required, and there is a shelf life pressure after opening | Hardcover books, picture books, and instruction manuals |
| POE hot melt adhesive | 90~110℃ | Good heat resistance and low odor | High requirements for paper adaptation | Export books and magazines, high-temperature transportation scenarios |
| Animal glue (bone glue) | — | Compatible with traditional fine decoration craftsmanship | Easy to mold and slow to dry | Old style hardcover book case, restoration category |
Sunlife hot melt adhesive from Guangzhou Sunlife Trading mainly comes in two types, EVA and APAO, on the book binding line. It is divided into several levels based on softening point, opening time, and low-temperature toughness. Customers can specify the specific model by reporting three parameters: paper, machine speed, and book thickness, without having to repeatedly try and error between categories.
Not recommended. Due to different basic resin systems, mixing and melting can easily lead to delamination, wire drawing, and abnormal viscosity. When changing the glue, the glue pot should be emptied and cleaned.
In terms of performance, it is indeed stronger, but it requires specialized equipment and costs several times higher. EVA is completely sufficient for ordinary teaching aids, blindly using PUR is a waste.
Trends in binding hot melt adhesives and polyolefin adhesives: In recent years, the binding industry has had to adapt to many changes, including increasing production line speed and adopting polyolefin (POE) adhesives. Which products can help you meet the demands brought about by these developments and why? Hot melt adhesive for faster binding line speed […]
In the book printing and binding industry, hot melt adhesive is the core auxiliary material that determines the quality, environmental protection level, and compliance of books. Many printing and binding factories encounter these problems: new books that have been left out of the factory for a long time turn yellow and peel off, pages crack, […]
Packaging hot melt adhesiveFor packaging, it is not unfamiliar, not only with high efficiency, but also with high cost-effectiveness. Hot melt adhesive is often used for packaging in cardboard boxes. Conventional slotted cardboard box (RSC)Use 1/8 inch beads approximately 1/2 inch from the edge of the flip cover to create durable cardboard boxes. In this […]
