Hot melt adhesive particles are applied through extrusion, rolling or spraying. Their high melt viscosity makes them an ideal choice for porous and permeable substrates. Hot melt adhesive can bond a wide range of different substrates, including paper, rubber, ceramics, metals, plastics, glass, wood, etc.

Nowadays, hot melt adhesives come in a variety of different types and can be widely applied in multiple industries. For use in industrial processes, hot melt adhesive is supplied in larger rods and glue guns with higher melting rates. In addition to hot melt rods, hot melt adhesives can also be delivered in other forms, such as granular or powdered hot melt blocks for bulk melt processors. The larger application of hot melt adhesives has traditionally relied on pneumatic systems to provide adhesives.

Some common examples of industries that use hot melt adhesives include:

Sealing of corrugated boxes and cardboard boxes in the packaging industry

Spine gluing in the binding industry

Profile packaging, product assembly and lamination applications in the woodworking industry

Disposable diapers are made by using hot melt adhesive to bond non-woven materials to the base and elastic bands.

Many electronic equipment manufacturers may also use hot melt adhesives to fix parts and wires or to secure, insulate and protect the components of equipment.

The following are some general terms used for hot melt adhesives:

Open time: While the surface still maintains sufficient viscosity, the working time for bonding can range from a few seconds for fast-curing hot melt adhesives to an infinite length for pressure-sensitive adhesives.

Setting time: The time to form a bond of acceptable strength

Viscosity: The degree of surface adhesion of the adhesive; It affects the bonding strength between wetted surfaces.
