How long can books bound with hot melt adhesive be stored? Four key factors that determine lifespan

Directly give the interval

Use qualified EVA Hot melt adhesive granulesThe wireless adhesive bound book typically maintains its spine intact for 8 to 15 years under normal temperature, humidity, and browsing conditions; It is also common for picture books and commemorative albums with good storage conditions and low browsing frequency to remain unopened for 20-30 years. But if the workshop process is not in place or if it is exposed to high temperature and humidity for a long time, it is not uncommon for pages to fall off within two to three years. So the answer to the question of ‘how long can it last’ depends more on the process and environment, rather than the shelf life of the adhesive itself.

Factor 1: Quality of milling back and groove drawing

Hot melt adhesive is used to mechanically bite and fix book pages, and the adhesive must penetrate into the fibers of the paper cross-section. If the milling depth is insufficient or the knife is blunt, only press the edge of the paper smooth, and the glue is only attached to the surface, which looks quite firm. It may drop after two years of flipping. Generally, the milling depth is controlled at 1.0-1.5 millimeters, and increasing the contact area with the groove is the most effective step to extend the service life.

Factor 2: Adhesive layer thickness and compression

  • The spine glue layer is too thin and lacks strength; If it is too thick, the internal heat dissipation will be slow, it will become brittle, and it will also cause difficulty in flipping pages. The standard control is between 0.6-1.0 millimeters.
  • Insufficient pressing time resulted in insufficient bonding between the book pages and the adhesive, leading to the formation of a virtual adhesive interface after cooling.
  • Newly released books should not be immediately marked high, and sufficient cooling and shaping time should be given.

Factor Three: Paper and Ink

Copperplate paper, laminated covers, and UV coated surfaces are all low surface energy materials, and the adhesive is not easy to bite. When the direction of the paper strands is not parallel to the spine, the flipping stress will concentrate on the adhesive layer, accelerating cracking. If the spine of a book filled with solid ink is not left blank, the adhesive will actually stick to the ink layer instead of the paper, and the lifespan will be significantly shortened.

Factor Four: Storage Environment

environmentThe impact on lifespanSuggestion
Dry at room temperature (20-25 ℃)Small impactIdeal storage conditions
High temperature (long-term above 40 ℃)Softening of adhesive layer and deformation of spineAvoid inside the car, attic, and near heat sources
High humidity (back to Nantian, basement)Paper absorbs moisture and expands, causing interface peelingStore off the ground and add dehumidification
Frequent and complete levelingThe adhesive layer is repeatedly bentThick book suggests adding glue to lock the thread

What can be done to make it more durable

For archives, textbooks, and reference books that require long-term preservation and frequent flipping, it is recommended to use thread locking adhesive: first lock the thread to ensure that the book is not loose, and then use hot melt adhesive to stick the spine and cover, which can significantly extend the lifespan compared to pure adhesive packaging. It is also recommended to handle brochures with a thickness exceeding 3 centimeters or a weight that is too large.

FAQ

Q: Can the yellowing and hardening of the spine of a book after being stored for too long be remedied?
Answer: Minor aging can be re milled and reassembled, but it is not recommended to re glue the paper after it becomes brittle, as it is prone to tearing.

Q: Do rubber granules have a shelf life? Will expired rubber make books deteriorate earlier?
Answer: Unopened rubber granules can generally be stored for 12-24 months. Books made from damp and deteriorated glue are indeed more prone to cracking, and it is important to conduct warehouse acceptance and first in, first out.

Q: What should we pay special attention to in humid areas of the south?
Answer: Control the humidity in the workshop, seal the rubber particles to prevent moisture, avoid stacking finished products on the ground, and try not to arrange thick adhesive packaging when returning to Nantian.

Guangzhou Sunlife TradingSunlife Hot Melt AdhesiveWe provide different grades of side glue and back glue for book binding, and the opening time can be matched according to the line speed of the glue binding machine. We can also assist customers in on-site calibration of milling depth and adhesive layer thickness. To make books durable, selecting the right glue is only half, adjusting the process parameters to the right position is the other half.
