Book edge glue is an important but often overlooked application of book binding glue. Simply put, it refers to using a thin layer of hot melt adhesive to bond the inside of the cover to the first, last, or final page of the book. Although side bonding is much smaller in volume than spine bonding, it is important for two main reasons – it forms a hinge on the cover that can release pressure from the spine when the book bends or opens, and makes the finished publication more aesthetically pleasing.
There are three main methods for using book edge glue for side bonding – using a wheel system, intermittent extrusion nozzles, or using side lines. The wheel tank system works by using two horizontal wheels to pick up molten adhesive from an open tank. Then, the wheels apply hot melt adhesive in the form of a thin film on both sides of the book. It is not precise, not very adjustable, and sometimes produces a string of bookbinding adhesive because it is not connected to the reverse rotation roller.
Due to its more precise intermittent function, the extrusion nozzle system occupies a small area, which helps to minimize hot melt adhesive drawing problems to the greatest extent possible. In recent years, this smaller closed system has become very popular because it can minimize carbon buildup and also reduce overall adhesive consumption during the application of bookbinding glue.
Although somewhat primitive and imprecise, the sideline system is also an effective and economical choice for low-quality publications with a short lifecycle. The system uses metal wires located in the spine glue applicator pot to move the “waves” of bookbinding adhesive from the drum to the side of the publication. Due to the higher viscosity of ridge glue compared to most side glue, using the same adhesive in both applications can have adverse effects on deposition and compression.

Used for binding; PSA Hot melt adhesive provides unlimited opening time and strong bonding, while minimizing annoying pulling wires that may cause machine downtime and product defects.
