What are the reasons for the weak adhesion of packaging hot melt adhesive?

If you are a packaging manufacturer, you may want your box and carton sealing process to be efficient, effective, and worry free to keep your production line running. However, if the packaging hot melt adhesive fails to fully bond the corrugated paper substrate, attempting to identify the root cause of the problem may be frustrating and time-consuming.

Packaging Hot Melt Adhesive

Here are five reasons why packaging hot melt adhesive cannot bond substrates together:

1.PressurizationIncorrect time

The sealing, pressurization, or application of force between the shell and the cardboard box is the key to achieving successful bonding. If you encounter adhesive failure, it may be due to incorrect pressurization time. This means that sufficient downforce cannot be applied and the adhesive cannot fully penetrate the substrate. It is necessary to apply the correct level of pressure to achieve proper adhesion without affecting the performance of the substrate.

2. Application temperature needs to be adjusted

In colder months, the temperature of the corrugated substrate itself may be low enough to cure the packaging hot melt adhesive too quickly during the production process before you are ready to bond. Ensure that your substrate and adhesive are at the ideal temperature level for sufficient curing time.

3. Adhesive properties have been altered

If the performance of your packaging hot melt adhesive changes due to thermal degradation or oxidative degradation, your substrate is likely to fail to bond. This is because this change can cause carbonization, where the adhesive hardens and does not flow onto the substrate.

4. Adhesive cannot fully wet

Nowadays, many corrugated packaging substrates use highly recyclable ingredients, which leads to shorter paper fibers. These shorter paper fibers will make it difficult for the packaging hot melt adhesive to fully wet and achieve adhesion. If you encounter adhesive failure when using highly recycled corrugated paper, consider using adhesives specifically formulated for challenging substrates.

5. Uneven glue flow

When using a nozzle to apply packaging hot melt adhesive, uneven flow can cause the adhesive to fail. Some areas may have too much or too little adhesive. Ensure that your nozzle is compatible with the selected adhesive, so that an appropriate amount of adhesive flows through and is consistently dispensed each time.
