Before buying hot melt adhesive and choosing a model, many people’s first question is: “What exactly is hot melt adhesive made of?” Especially when they hear “EVA hot melt adhesive”, they feel even more confused. Below, using Sunlife’s frontline training and repeated on-site lectures, we will explain what EVA hot melt adhesive is, why it is used, how it works, and when it is used.

EVA=ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer(Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate), It is the most common thermoplastic polymer. Make it into hot melt adhesive, usuallySolid particles or blocks——At room temperature, it is hard and melts into a flowing liquid when heated to a certain temperature. After being coated, it cools down and returns to a solid.
The “VA content” (the proportion of vinyl acetate) is crucial: high VA makes the adhesive more flexible and sticky; VA is low, and the adhesive is harder and firmer. Sunlife’s book and magazine adhesive, graphic and text store adhesive, packaging adhesive, and pearl cotton adhesive are mostly formulated with EVA as the base material.
In the hot melt adhesive family, the reason why EVA has become the main force in books, packaging, and graphic printing is mainly due to its “thermoplasticity”:
Many people think that hot melt adhesive is “chemically bonded”, but in fact, EVA is mainly used forPhysical cooling solidification:
This is also why “temperature” is so important for hot melt adhesive – if the temperature is not enough, the adhesive will not flow and stick firmly, and if the temperature is too high, EVA will thermally disintegrate, carbonize, turn yellow, and become brittle. Sunlife training repeatedly emphasizes:90% of after-sales service actually stems from equipment temperature control failureCalibrating the actual temperature of the glue pot with a thermometer is often more effective than changing the glue.

Taking Sunlife’s actual product line as an example, the most suitable material for EVA hot melt adhesive is “porous, able to be penetrated or adhered by adhesive”:
Tip: Polyolefins (such as PE based) and EVA are both thermoplastic hot melt adhesives, but polyolefins are cleaner – with lower odor and no drawing, so Sunlife pearl cotton thread prioritizes using them.
Clearly state that ‘good at’ and ‘not good at’ to avoid pitfalls in selection:

EVA hot melt adhesive is not “one size fits all”. Selection should consider three things simultaneously:Material type+usage environment (temperature/contact with water)+equipment speedSunlife’s approach is that you provide us with the measured temperature of the sample, glue pot, and current model, and the technology provides a clear model and accompanying process card based on “material+machine speed+environment”, rather than just reporting a universal “hot melt adhesive”.
A: There is no absolute good or bad, it depends on the scene. EVA has a wide range of comprehensive adaptability and high cost-effectiveness, making it the main force in books, graphics, and packaging; Polyolefins have a lower odor and are not brushed, making them more suitable for pearl cotton, food contact packaging, and applications that are sensitive to odors. Sunlife selects products according to their respective purposes.
A: EVA itself is one of the mature food contact grade polymer systems, but specific safety and compliance should be based on the accompanying MSDS and testing report, and cannot be generalized as “all safe” or “all toxic”. The compliance of Sunlife shall be subject to the scope of the actual inspection report.
The essence of EVA hot melt adhesive is a “plastic adhesive that switches states with temperature” – it can be applied when heated and stuck when cooled, relying on physical curing rather than chemical reactions. Once you understand this, then look at how to match the temperature, machine speed, and model. Providing Sunlife with the measured temperature of the sample and glue pot on time, and matching the model and process card according to the purpose, is much more stable than blindly testing the glue.
