A beginner’s Guide to Hot Melt Adhesive

2022-05-02    Views: 3

What is hot melt adhesive ? Hot melt adhesives or hot glue are composed of thermoplastic polymers. They are applied in liquid form when melted but become solid again when cooled. Hot glue is used in commercial and residential areas. It is used for various paper products, handicrafts, hobbies, woodworking, assembly, packaging, labels, etc.

The benefits of hot melt adhesive:

Cost-effectiveness

Easy to use

Formulas made for various applications/materials

Easy to store

Excellent sealing quality

Different types of hot melt adhesive

EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) is a polymer suitable for packaging and assembly formulations. It is economically effective at standard hot melt adhesive operating temperatures ranging from -22 to 176 degrees Fahrenheit (-30 to 80 degrees Celsius). EVA is the most common type of hot melt adhesive, used in applications such as packaging and product assembly.

PA (polyamide) is a polymer used to formulate adhesives that better resist extreme temperatures and chemicals ranging from -76 to 266 degrees Fahrenheit (-60 to 130 degrees Celsius).

Compared with traditional EVA products, polyamide is an expensive product with higher heat resistance.

PP (polypropylene) is a polymer typically used in spray formulations to achieve specific adhesive properties, such as delayed setting time. It is effective at temperatures ranging from -22 to 230 degrees Fahrenheit (-30 to 110 degrees Celsius).

PUR (Polyurethane) is similar to traditional hot melt adhesives, but the difference lies in that it absorbs a small amount of moisture after curing. A few days later, the intake of water will cause a permanent chemical change. This chemical change enhances the heat resistance and chemical resistance of this adhesive. Chemical reactions allow PUR to form structural bonds similar to those of epoxy resin, but in a shorter time. PUR is highly suitable for a variety of applications, but it is typically used in woodworking.

Terms related to hot melt:
Open time – is the period of time that can be used to establish bonds. Viscosity – is a measure of the resistance of a liquid. One of the most important qualities of hot melt adhesive is that it affects the diffusion of the adhesive. Heat resistance – the temperature at which hot melt adhesive maintains its physical appearance.
